about

Originally a Juneteenth benefit for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, this release celebrates the music of artists who Caural had the pleasure of befriending and remixing between 2003 & 2008.

Armed with his Yamaha SU700 and CD-Rs of stems mailed to his apartment, Mastoon did entire reworkings of their original source material or, in some cases, discarded it entirely in favor of something new.

Listened to together, this collection becomes a record of its time: the ascendance of the “beat scene” amidst hardware samplers, cracked software, Myspace, and weekly djay nights like Sketchbook - begun in Los Angeles and continued in New York City by Caural and pal Take (aka Sweatson Klank) - where cutting edge became commonplace.

Includes sounds courtesy of Adventure Time (Daedelus & dublab founder Frosty), Misel Quitno (Dimlite), The One AM Radio (Hrishikesh Hirway, the voice and creator of Song Exploder), and many others.

For its 2023 re-release on cassette & digital, a remastered instrumental version of Explosive (from Capcom’s Final Fight: Streetwise) begins “Side A”.

Caural California

Recording his first music on a Casio beginning at six, Caural (born Zachary Mastoon) went on to play in multiple bands before studying jazz improvisation with avant-garde giant Anthony Braxton, Javanese Gamelan aboard Semester At Sea, and experimental music at NYU. He began fusing his disparate influences together quite literally in 1999 with what became his signature instrument: a Yamaha SU700. ... more
