Named with equal parts sarcasm and acceptance of providence, “Nothing Bad Is Ever Gonna Happen” is a tactile soundtrack of hand-played, dusty reggae and jazz records found in a Catskills craftsman Mastoon bought with his wife in the height of the pandemic. The song’s title portended the near future for the couple as a blessing and curse they chose to leave behind, while the music itself - similarly alternating between strength and melancholy - soon crescendos only to fall. We’re left with a ghostly voice lamenting the experience over percussion, chopped mbira, and shimmering warmth from analog synthesizers. Nothing bad really does happen - the present unfolds as a gift for which we can only thank our demons - and angels everywhere.
